Interview with Fine Jewelry brand, La Tache Bobo.

Well its my first official ‘Exclusive’ interview with a very fabulous Designer, since the website officially launched as FASHSQUAD last Month!

I was very excited to interview the Founder of La Tache Bobo, I was first introduced to the Brand earlier this month at Per Lei Couture Boutique, I fell head over heels for the designs which have a glamorous medieval vibe to them, each piece is handcrafted from the finest gemstones, they really are extraordinarily unique.

Name: Elena Gondorf
Age: 34
Title: Founder, Creative Director

Where does the name ‘La Tache Bobo’ originate from, what is the meaning?
La Tache = mark, splash
Bobo = “The French have embraced a new expression to describe those who have it all: Bobo. The term is short for bourgeois and bohemian, two social castes no one ever expected to find mixed up together. […]” (Source: NY Times)
La Tache Bobo is a combination of La Tache and Bobo, i.e. a splash or mark of mixed up bourgeois and bohemian styles or savoir vivre.

Did you have any formal training in jewelry design and creation? How did you come to realize your talent?
My inspiration for founding La Tache Bobo was my desire for precious, exclusive jewellery, which at the same time is fashionable while being easy-to-wear – understated, timeless luxury with a focus on quality over superficiality – which I did not find anywhere else.
In our jewellery designs I draw a lot of inspiration from my Russian heritage and from the many cities and countries I have visited and lived in – from their cultural, artistic, fashion and historical diversity and impressions; combined with my natural intuition and personal sense for beauty, fashion, art and all things extraordinary.
My husband and I are avid art collectors and supporters, not only enjoying collecting works of art but also admiring and exploring the broad range of artistic expressions in the many places we and our family lived in and visited.
Early in my career I worked as a model in New York and Milan, after having finished my studies in New York.

What was the first piece of jewelry you ever made? How have your designs evolved?
We designed a capsule collection using beautiful, unique semi-precious stones for El Corte Ingles (the leading department store and fashion retailer in Spain).
Since then we are using only precious stones for our designs.

How do you go about creating a new piece? We’d love to know about your design process, choosing materials, design development, how the team works to do this, etc.
Creating a new collection starts with “a story” and the precious stones, which we are sourcing worldwide. To tell “the story” behind a new collection we put it into a short film – in addition to the images and jewellery pieces.
We endeavour to evoke some feelings around our jewellery – and “the story”.

Take us through your “typical” day at work.
I work most of my time from my Barcelona studio – a beautiful space where I can dream.
In addition, I spend a lot of time travelling – sourcing precious stones, meeting customers, and looking for inspirations.
Days are “fast and furious”.
Fortunately, “my right hand” Todd is running the London office and dealing with most of the commercial matters…

If you could see any woman wearing your beautiful designs, who would it be?
You need to have a certain personality to wear our jewellery: confident, effortless, and stylish.
It is not what you wear, it is who you are.

What advice would you give to other working mothers on how to balance their professional and personal life?
I am in no position to give any advice.
For myself, I found my balance and calling with the tremendous support of my amazing husband, my beautiful children and fantastic team.

If you could choose one fashion designer to collaborate with, who would it be?
Lanvin (Alber Elbaz)… absolutely admire his effortless style!

Here are some of my personal favourites from the collection currently in Per Lei Couture;
